K-Drama Kit for Starters
Imagine all your expectations, guilty desires and fantasies perfectly written by writers who excellently intensify and supply the right ingredients when needed while the actors on the other hand execute their acting so realistically you start thinking he and she shouldstart dating for instance That Winter the Wind blows lead actors although it never happened since Jo In Sung who was incredibly believable in his acting already had a girlfriend still the fantasy possibility is such a treat I really would love to happen even from that perspective. However, dear starters I would like to warn you that it isn’t smooth all the way. There are times when an episode starts fantastically but becomes a total drag half way through the end or vice versa. There are also instances when a story line is beautiful but the actors are incredibly maladroit in handling the right emotion in whatever situation given which in turn makes a viewer like you want to give up midway through the whole season due to immense frustration. Although that’s totally normal and happens to all of us, don’t be disheartened. Be experimental and spontaneous you’ll find your jam in time. So without further ado, here is the list of the dramas I think would suit a starter like you since I’ve enjoyed it, so you might too.
1. Like a Fairytale
So what you see on left side, wait, why do I get the feeling that I sound like a tourist guide, so wrong, any who, is a poster. (Imagine if I just said that and stopped right there and then, can’t stop laughing right now 🙂 uhm..ehem Okay seriously speaking) What you can view on the left is a poster of the four episode drama called ‘Like a Fairytale‘. Despite of its title, it is actually a paradox from our typical perception of happy endings and relationship love stories. It is a drama special hosted by the KBS network so short you can finish it from 12 am to 4am. Anyway, the story line revolves around your typical nerd slash dork adolescent teenager who is pimpled face and very much sensitive to how he looks. At the start of the story you’ll see that he’s already in college and having an admiration towards a girl who is his complete opposite, an angelic beautiful face to die for. She is a well traveled girl who just came from England. At first I thought it was solely centred on his life due to the first episode however as the story unfolded, the heroine’s back ground was gradually introduced. The hero and the heroine actually came from the same school and club however, since both of them have different priorities they didn’t interact much. Several years after, when both of them have graduated they met and became a couple until they decided to settle down. Basically it is a story of a married couple breaking up and getting back together for 3 times in the span of 15 years.
2. My Girl
Lesson number one in Kdrama land, it is a place where you will encounter a rich, young and handsome Chaebol who will look down at you in the beginning but then grab your hand and brusquely pull you beside his car wherever you are just to say, ‘Never love another man because I want you for myself only’ privately. That’s why I advice you to have an arm and wrist warm up before getting in. Although they make it appear sweet on tv and a return of loving affection from the Hero, I still find it disrespectful and quite violent. Anyhow, going back to the topic, My girl is a drama which will make you cry, laugh and smile all through out the episode. It’s a feel good rom-com that talks about the life of Yoo Rin. She is a daughter of a gambler. Due to her life’s misfortunes, she zealously works hard whatever the situation may be until she meets Gong Chan. The rich chaebol I was telling you about. At that time he needed a translator for the investors who were coming from the neighbouring country of South Korea since she’s also a tourist guide who speaks the Mandarin language fluently so she was chosen. When she thought it was the end it wasn’t. Gong Chan needed a person who would act as a pretend cousin so he asked Yoo Rin and thats when their love story began.
3. King of Dramas
My favourite of all time. King of dramas is a ruthless drama that would frustrate and shock you because of the Male lead villainous attitude. At first I couldn’t figure out how the writer would untangle the knots served to the viewers but as the drama continued it made me understand that he’s just like any of us. A bold dreamer who wants to achieve his dreams, his style however is just ridiculously over the top and unnecessarily deathly like every situation is treated as a life-to-death case that requires an immediate action. At first he had everything until he became subjected to his green eyed minion. I remembered how he would emphasis to his production team that even if they had to die just to give a high quality drama they MUST do it by hook or by crook. This drama was the one that inspired me to do well in whatever God has given me; writing was one of the highlighted things here so it became my instant favourite especially when the Heroine had her room setting design altered according to her comfort and taste. Waaaah, every writers dream, a comfortable and beautiful environment where you can write, write and just write and be loved because of your ideas.
4. King 2 Hearts
If you are a sucker for Royalty and till-death-do-us-apart stories like me then this pick is the right one for you to name a few Goong or Princess Hours and The Moon that Embraces the Sun are also some of the easy choices I’ve heard of. Anyhow, King 2 hearts is set in a fictional Korea that still has their Royal blood lineage intact and on the go however, North Korea and South Korea are still on cold terms (That’s what she said). In the drama, the king dies so the second in line ass-prince takes the throne. Overwhelmed with heart break due to the complicated relationship he has with his north Korean fiancé and mourning due to his brother’s death, he ascended the throne with a strong yet heavy heart. Also, what’s so good about this drama is the love story distinctly portrayed by the actors. Even though they were treated severely by antagonists and the random forces that wants to put them down their courage did not waver. They stood by each other towards the end.
5. Goong or Princess Hours
One of the simplest and enjoyable dramas I’ve watched. After watching this drama I started to fantasise and dream about stories in my head with the same theme, arranged marriages. I mean it is just the best and easiest way to make your leads closer and enamoured with each other; an entanglement that is irrevocable. So basically, Goong is a story about young love in face of tradition, politics, and intrigue. In the imaginary world, modern-day Korea is a constitutional monarchy and the Royal Family lives in a grand Palace, the Goong. Faced with the decreasing popularity among the public for the Royalty, a grand wedding for the Crown Prince, Lee Shin, is decided to be the best publicity move to improve the image of the Royalty and at the same time prepare Shin for immediate succession. But who is the intended bride? It is the headstrong, awkward, and sweet spirited Shin Chae Kyung that just happens to go to the same exclusive art school. Chae Kyung was betrothed to become the next Crown Princess by her grandfather and Shin’s grandfather.
6. The Greatest Love or Best Love
Of course the drama Kit wouldn’t be complete if we didn’t have a drama that have characters who played as celebrities. Best Love was an easy favourite for me because of how easy going the story was and how it made me emotional with every heart breaking episode. Not to mention how the second lead looked very much like my crush… back in the day. So anyways here’s all about it. Ae Jung was once the most popular member of girl band The National Treasure Girls. However 10 years ago the band broke up and she received most of the blame. Despite her warm personality her career has suffered ever since and she now spends her time fighting for air time on variety shows. Dokko Jin is a top movie star at the height of his career. The two meet and become involved in each other’s careers. Yoon Pil Joo is a doctor of oriental medicine who has no interest in the entertainment industry but agrees to make a dating show. Dokko Jin helps get Ae Jung a role on a new reality show called Couple Making. Pil Joo is the bachelor being set up on Couple Making. Both men fall for Ae Jung both off and on the screen.
7. Boys Over Flowers
If I had to choose my childhood favourite amongst all the Korean dramas I have watched it would be Boys over flowers. It’s a rom-com and a typical drama you’d watch just to enjoy without having to be analytical or critical especially when you encounter scenes that are just so silly. However, it does not necessarily mean I’m not going to share it with you. This drama I believe is best watched with the preteens. I liked how it sustained my narrative need for fairytales and beautiful boys who have fallen in love with pauper girls back when I was 12 going 13. Now, that I have watched it again at my age (16 years old, 4 months till 17 though) I realized that it’s not something I could watch again and enjoy. The memory of my fondness towards it is still there and I would love for you guys to watch it as well if you haven’t. It came from the same production as Goong and Playful Kiss. It’s a Korean remake of Meteor Garden which basically has the same plot F4 boys and a Heroine plus the best friend.
8. You’re Beautiful
I was trying hard to remember this drama for like 5 minutes until I looked at BOF. The story’s concept is quite similar but the difference is it’s centred on the life of the band called A.N.JELL and a cross dresser. After watching the first episode of the drama I was like, yes at least something to look forward to! The management company of the idol group A.N.JELL insisted on adding a new singer to the group as the lead vocal, Tae Kyung’s voice was hurting. However, the new member, Mi Nam, had to go to the States to repair a botched eye job just before signing the contract. His agent came up with the idea of having his twin sister, Mi Nyu.
9. That Winter the Wind Blows
This drama has a beautiful visual that will suck up all your attention the moment you lay your eyes on it. The story was so compelling that I really tried my best to mould it according to my school project’s spin off of Noli Me Tangere in Filipino during my Senior year. Harhar, I know, I’m that smitten. Although I wasn’t able to do it due to the amount of time and concentration needed to make it well done, the reception of my classmates towards my proposed story line was positive and that’s enough for me. In my defense, it was near to exams so it was really hard for me to do. Anyways, That Winter the Wind blows is about Oh Soo who is known as the best gambler in the Cheongdam neighbourhood lives a meaningless life. His parents dumped him at an early age and he lost his first lover. Meanwhile, Oh Young is the heir to a large corporation, but she lives a lonely existence. She lost her eyesight at an early age and her father recently passed away. Their fate soon becomes intertwined because of Oh Soo’s greediness.
10. Cruel City or Heartless City
Cruel City has been by far one of the best dramas I have watched for the year of 2013. I swear after seeing the pictures of Jung Kyung Ho in his latest whereabouts where in he tosses a ball for one of Korea’s ball game, I still see him as someone lethal and suspicious. His the one in the picture, I know his really lean and lanky but I swear after watching the drama you be like…HOHO! 🙂 It’s a mafia-syndicate drama that has a dark and thrilling premise. Although I know it’s really going to be complicated and explicit since these kind of stories are usually watched in action and suspense movies I really admire how the drama is masterfully thought.Right now, the drama’s already halfway through the 20 episodes, I just hope that it takes on with its consistency as a good badass drama with a sincere plot and not fall short as one of the most frustrating drama that could have turned out fantastic. What I’m honestly waiting for is the OTP’s and potential love triangle story, their fate is just so convoluted I wonder how they’d be getting a happy ever after even though it’s quite impossible due to their job’s nature, but you know, I still hope (guiltily scurries away).
